Obituary
Canton – Gudger Larkin Cagle, Jr., 80 of the Cruso Community passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 
2022, at his residence.  A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Gudger Larkin 
Cagle, Sr. and Arlene Caldwell Cagle. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 
three sons, Stephen, Stanley and Stuart Cagle; and a granddaughter, Emily Payne.
Gudger was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served in Germany. He graduated in 1970 
from Southwestern Community College and was employed as a pipe fitter and later retired from Dayco 
Corporation. Gudger was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, had a great sense of humor, and never 
met a stranger. He cherished his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Trull Cagle; daughter, Shannon Stokely and her 
husband, Fred of Canton and four grandchildren, Hayden, Lily, and Olivia Payne, and Abigail 
Stokely; and his furry baby, Buddy.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2022, in the Canton Chapel of 
Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Jeremy Cagle officiating. Burial 
will follow at New Cruso Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. 
prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 100 Executive 
Center drive, Asheville, NC 28801.
The care of Mr. Cagle has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Canton.
